Additional Resources about the Trees in Miami

Several books are valuable resources for additional information about Miami trees. They are listed and annotated below. We have also added several websites, in addition to this one, that may be helpful.

Tomlinson, P.B. 2001. The Biology of Trees Native to Tropical Florida. Published by the author, Harvard Forest, Petersham, MA 01366.
Beautiful book, essential for learning about native trees, but includes only a few very common exotic species

Scurlock, J.P. 1987. Native trees and shrubs of the Florida Keys. Laurel Press, Bethel Park, PA.
A nicely illustrated book on trees and shrubs native to the Florida Keys

Wunderlin, R.P. and B.F. Hansen. 2003. Guide to the Vascular Plants of Florida. University Press of Florida, Gainesville.
The authority on plants native and naturalized (reproducing by themselves) in Florida. It includes keys and names and distributions of species. It does not include the hundreds of species in Miami which (fortunately) are not naturalized.

Websites

Gifford Arboretum, University of Miami      http://fig.cox.miami.edu/Arboretum/
Provides directions, a list of events, and photographs of plants in the arboretum

Miami Dade County Parks and Recreation    http://www.miamidade.gov/parks
Provides directions to, and activities in, the units of the county park system. Two sites are particularly important for looking at trees: The Deering Estate and the Fruit and Spice Park.

Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden  http://www.fairchildgarden.org and http://virtualherbarium.org/
Provides a good visual description of the gardens, directions and future events. The living collections of the garden are documented nicely by a homepage called the Virtual Herbarium, including many photographs.

Center for Plant Systematics, University of South Florida   http://www.plantatlas.usf.edu/isb/default.htm
Prof. Wunderlin and colleagues have produced an excellent website with descriptions, distribution maps and photographs of plants native to, and naturalized in, the state:  The Atlas of Florida Vascular Plants.
